FHE for D&C 124

 Activity:

  • You will need to write the phrases, highlighted in blue, on slips of paper

  • A picture of Jesus Christ

  • Tape

As you read D&C 124:13-21, when you come across the words in blue, have the children tape the corresponding strip next to the picture of Christ.

13 Let him, therefore, hearken to your counsel, and I will bless him with a multiplicity of blessings; let him be faithful and true in all things from henceforth, and he shall be great in mine eyes;

14 But let him remember that his stewardship will I require at his hands.

15 And again, verily I say unto you, blessed is my servant Hyrum Smith; for I, the Lord, love him because of the integrity of his heart, and because he loveth that which is right before me, saith the Lord.

16 Again, let my servant John C. Bennett help you in your labor in sending my word to the kings and people of the earth, and stand by you, even you my servant Joseph Smith, in the hour of affliction; and his reward shall not fail if he receive counsel.

17 And for his love he shall be great, for he shall be mine if he do this, saith the Lord. I have seen the work which he hath done, which I accept if he continue, and will crown him with blessings and great glory.

18 And again, I say unto you that it is my will that my servant Lyman Wight should continue in preaching for Zion, in the spirit of meekness, confessing me before the world; and I will bear him up as on eagles’ wings; and he shall beget glory and honor to himself and unto my name.

19 That when he shall finish his work I may receive him unto myself, even as I did my servant David Patten, who is with me at this time, and also my servant Edward Partridge, and also my aged servant Joseph Smith, Sen., who sitteth with Abraham at his right hand, and blessed and holy is he, for he is mine.

20 And again, verily I say unto you, my servant George Miller is without guile; he may be trusted because of the integrity of his heart; and for the love which he has to my testimony I, the Lord, love him.

21 I therefore say unto you, I seal upon his head the office of a bishopric, like unto my servant Edward Partridge, that he may receive the consecrations of mine house, that he may administer blessings upon the heads of the poor of my people, saith the Lord. Let no man despise my servant George, for he shall honor me.

After you have completed reading, repeat the qualities, placed around the Savior. Help them understand words that they might not be familiar with. According to these verses, how does the Lord feel about people who develop these qualities?

Challenge:

Hold up the strip that says, "integrity of his heart." Explain that “Integrity means thinking and doing what is right at all times, no matter what the consequences” (For the Strength of Youth, 19). You could also share examples of a child demonstrating integrity from your own experience or from the Friend or Liahona magazines. Challenge the children to set a goal to act with more integrity this week. If you notice them acting with integrity, recognize them for their efforts.

FHE Lesson for D&C 115-120

 Read

D&C 119

1 Verily, thus saith the Lord, I require all their surplus property to be put into the hands of the bishop of my church in Zion,

2 For the building of mine house, and for the laying of the foundation of Zion and for the priesthood, and for the debts of the Presidency of my Church.

3 And this shall be the beginning of the tithing of my people

Activity

You will need

  • Melting chocolate

  • Several types of small candies (we used bite-sized Kit-Kats, M&Ms, candy eyes, peanut butter cups, and 2 kinds of candy corn)

What does these verses teach about why we pay tithing? You can teach your children about tithing by giving them 10 pieces of candy (for things like M&M's you could give more). Ask them to give you one tenth of their candy. Point out how Heavenly Father gives us everything, and He only requires us to give Him one tenth. These verses teach us that He does not really "need" your money, because He has created everything, so everything is already His. We pay tithing out of faith and obedience. Tithing money is used to build temples, churches, and it is used to fund other things that the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles need to build up the kingdom of Heaven on earth.

You could have children put their nine tenths on a baking sheet,, covered in parchment paper. Explain that Heavenly Father has promised to give you blessings if you are obedient to the Law of Tithing. Pour melted chocolate over the candy pieces and add more candy to make a candy bark of "extra blessings. See the video below to see how we did this.

D&C 117

4 Let them repent of all their sins, and of all their covetous desires, before me, saith the Lord; for what is property unto me? saith the Lord.

6 For have I not the fowls of heaven, and also the fish of the sea, and the beasts of the mountains? Have I not made the earth? Do I not hold the destinies of all the armies of the nations of the earth?

7 Therefore, will I not make solitary places to bud and to blossom, and to bring forth in abundance? saith the Lord.

8 Is there not room enough on the mountains of Adam-ondi-Ahman, and on the plains of Olaha Shinehah, or the land where Adam dwelt, that you should covet that which is but the drop, and neglect the more weighty matters?

Activity

You will need

  • A small cup of water or a loaded squirt gun(we used the mL syringes that come with infant Tylenol)

  • A few buckets of water

Your family could compare a “drop” of water with something more “weighty,” such as a bucket of water. Think about the things that could be considered a "drop." These are things that seem big in a moment, but can distract us from the more important things in life. As you think of something that is considered a "drop," allow your child to squirt you with a squirter gun or pour a small amount of water on your head. After each child has had a turn, point out that you are not super wet,, and though a motivation of these little things could add up, some things are a lot more "weighty" or heavy. As you discuss these things, allow your children to pour a bucket of water on your head.

Discuss

 How do less important things in our lives prevent us from receiving God’s abundant blessings?

FHE for D&C 111-114

 Read D&C 111: 2; 9-11

2 I have much treasure in this city for you, for the benefit of Zion, and many people in this city, whom I will gather out in due time for the benefit of Zion, through your instrumentality

9 This place you may obtain by hire. And inquire diligently concerning the more ancient inhabitants and founders of this city;

10 For there are more treasures than one for you in this city.

11 Therefore, be ye as wise as serpents and yet without sin; and I will order all things for your good, as fast as ye are able to receive them. Amen.

Discuss

Some of the early saints thought that "treasure" meant money. In these verses Heavenly Father is speaking about eternal treasures. What do you think some eternal treasures are?

Activity

Print the pictures below, or cut out some eternal treasures from a church magazine. Create a treasure hunt by hiding them around the house. As your family finds each item, discuss what you can do to show that you value it.

FHE for D&C 109-110

 Read or Summarize D&C 109

You can read it here, Doctrine and Covenants 109

Tell your children that this was the prayer given at the dedication of the Kirtland Temple. As you read it, look for things that can help you get excited about spending more time in the temple, as the things said in that prayer applies to temple work today.

For younger children you can ask them how they can help temple work continue, even if they are too young to go into the temple. Some examples might be babysitting while Mom and Dad go to the temple, finding names of deceased relatives that need temple work done, and learning about their ancestors.

Maybe you could take a trip to a temple and sing "I Love to See the Temple" and "The Spirit of God" as you look at the temple. "The Spirit of God" is sung at every temple dedication.

FHE Lesson for D&C 106-108

Read D&C 107:99–100

99 Wherefore, now let every man learn his duty, and to act in the office in which he is appointed, in all diligence.

100 He that is slothful shall not be counted worthy to stand, and he that learns not his duty and shows himself not approved shall not be counted worthy to stand. Even so. Amen.

Activity

Give a family member written instructions (older children) or verbal instructions (younger children) for a household task, and invite him or her to choose how to do the task: diligently, slothfully, or without reading/listening to the instructions. Let the rest of the family watch him or her do the task and guess which approach the family member chose. Then let other family members have a turn. Why does the Lord need us to both learn our duties and do them with all diligence?

FHE Lesson for 102-105

 Read

D&C 105

38 And again I say unto you, sue for peace, not only to the people that have smitten you, but also to all people;

39 And lift up an ensign of peace, and make a proclamation of peace unto the ends of the earth;

40 And make proposals for peace unto those who have smitten you, according to the voice of the Spirit which is in you, and all things shall work together for your good.

41 Therefore, be faithful; and behold, and lo, I am with you even unto the end. Even so. Amen.

Discuss

Ask you children what this scripture means. Break it down into simple questions. The following is an example:

  1. What does it mean to sue for peace?

  2. What does it mean to be peaceful with those who have smitten you?

  3. How do you give peace to all men, even if they haven't hurt you?

  4. What proposal of peace can you give to someone who has smitten you?

  5. What are you going to do to lift up an ensign of peace to your parents and siblings?

  6. What are you going to do to lift up an ensign of peace to the world?

  7. Point out that by acting in peace, the Lord promises that all things will work together for your good, and He promises to be with you to the end.

Activity

Click on the link below for Peace Bucks. Print 1 page, for each child, of the "peace bucks" below. Have your children come tell you when they choose peace over anger or hate. For example: Child A hits Child B. Child B tells Child A, "I choose peace." Then Child B tells you that he/she chose peace, and you give them a peace buck. That way, you are rewarding positive behavior. If you want to really reinforce the good behavior, you can let the peace bucks buy an ice cream cone at the end of the week.

FHE Lesson for D&C 98-101

 READ

D&C 100

16 For I will raise up unto myself a pure people, that will serve me in righteousness;

D&C 101

3 Yet I will own them, and they shall be mine in that day when I shall come to make up my jewels.

4 Therefore, they must needs be chastened and tried, even as Abraham, who was commanded to offer up his only son.

5 For all those who will not endure chastening, but deny me, cannot be sanctified.

18 They that remain, and are pure in heart, shall return, and come to their inheritances, they and their children, with songs of everlasting joy, to build up the waste places of Zion

Activity

Materials:

2 jars

1 cup of water

2 tbsp dirt

Filter (I used coffee filters that I had to use as a filter for masks. Pieces of old shirts or cloth works well too.)

Process:

Add the water and dirt to one of the jars. Put the filter over the second jar and secure in place with rubber band. Explain, that when we come to earth, we are like this jar, and we need to be sanctified or purified in order to be with Heavenly Father again. We can become purified and sanctified by following the commandments of Jesus Christ and allowing Heavenly Father and Jesus to guide us and by following their commandments, even when it is hard. Have your children think of examples.

Poor the water through the filter. Clean out the jar of mud and place a new filter on that jar. Continue moving the water back and forth between the two jars, replacing the filter each time. When your water is clear. Explain that though the water is clear, it is not pure enough to drink yet.

Poor that water into a small sauce pan, and bring to a boil for about 2 min. Explain that just as boiling the water kills all remaining germs, the Atonement of Jesus Christ kills any impurities in us.

When the water is done boiling, Poor it into a heat resistant dish to cool. When it is cool enough, it will be pure enough to drink.

D&C 93

 Activity

Print the following chart. Cut on all of the lines. Depending on the size of your family, you could play this game a few different ways.

1-8 Players- Put the column headings next to each other on the table. Turn the remaining pieces over and place them facedown on the table. Take turns turning over the pieces. Have children decide if the truth is about Christ or about us. Have children place them under the correct column.

1-4 players- Play a matching game where family members match the truth about Christ to the truth about us (not currently in the right order, in case you can't print).

4-8 players- Give each family member a truth. See if they can find their "buddy" by pairing up the family members with the truth about Christ that corresponds to the truth about us.

Truths About Christ

Truths About Us

26 The Spirit of truth is of God. I am the Spirit of truth, and John bore record of me, saying: He received a fulness of truth, yea, even of all truth;

20 For if you keep my commandments you shall receive of his fulness, and be glorified in me as I am in the Father; therefore, I say unto you, you shall receive grace for grace.

3 And that I am in the Father, and the Father in me, and the Father and I are one

29 Man was also in the beginning with God. Intelligence, or the light of truth, was not created or made, neither indeed can be.

21 And now, verily I say unto you, I was in the beginning with the Father, and am the Firstborn

28 He that keepeth his commandments receiveth truth and light, until he is glorified in truth and knoweth all things.

12 And I, John, saw that he received not of the fulness at the first, but received grace for grace;

23 Ye were also in the beginning with the Father; that which is Spirit, even the Spirit of truth

FHE for D&C 89-92

Read or Summarize D&C 89

1 A Word of Wisdom, for the benefit of the council of high priests, assembled in Kirtland, and the church, and also the saints in Zion—

2 To be sent greeting; not by commandment or constraint, but by revelation and the word of wisdom, showing forth the order and will of God in the temporal salvation of all saints in the last days—

3 Given for a principle with promise, adapted to the capacity of the weak and the weakest of all saints, who are or can be called saints.

4 Behold, verily, thus saith the Lord unto you: In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation—

5 That inasmuch as any man drinketh wine or strong drink among you, behold it is not good, neither meet in the sight of your Father, only in assembling yourselves together to offer up your sacraments before him.

6 And, behold, this should be wine, yea, pure wine of the grape of the vine, of your own make.

7 And, again, strong drinks are not for the belly, but for the washing of your bodies.

8 And again, tobacco is not for the body, neither for the belly, and is not good for man, but is an herb for bruises and all sick cattle, to be used with judgment and skill.

9 And again, hot drinks are not for the body or belly.

10 And again, verily I say unto you, all wholesome herbs God hath ordained for the constitution, nature, and use of man—

11 Every herb in the season thereof, and every fruit in the season thereof; all these to be used with prudence and thanksgiving.

12 Yea, flesh also of beasts and of the fowls of the air, I, the Lord, have ordained for the use of man with thanksgiving; nevertheless they are to be used sparingly;

13 And it is pleasing unto me that they should not be used, only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine.

14 All grain is ordained for the use of man and of beasts, to be the staff of life, not only for man but for the beasts of the field, and the fowls of heaven, and all wild animals that run or creep on the earth;

15 And these hath God made for the use of man only in times of famine and excess of hunger.

16 All grain is good for the food of man; as also the fruit of the vine; that which yieldeth fruit, whether in the ground or above the ground—

17 Nevertheless, wheat for man, and corn for the ox, and oats for the horse, and rye for the fowls and for swine, and for all beasts of the field, and barley for all useful animals, and for mild drinks, as also other grain.

18 And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones;

19 And shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures;

20 And shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint.

21 And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that the destroying angel shall pass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them. Amen.
