Lesson for D&C 58-59

Read D&C 59

18 Yea, all things which come of the earth, in the season thereof, are made for the benefit and the use of man, both to please the eye and to gladden the heart;

19 Yea, for food and for raiment, for taste and for smell, to strengthen the body and to enliven the soul.

20 And it pleaseth God that he hath given all these things unto man; for unto this end were they made to be used, with judgment, not to excess, neither by extortion.

21 And in nothing doth man offend God, or against none is his wrath kindled, save those who confess not his hand in all things, and obey not his commandments.

Discuss

What can we do to “confess … [God’s] hand in all things”?

Activity

Go for a walk or look at pictures, noticing things that “please the eye and … gladden the heart” (verse 18). You could take or draw pictures of what you find and then talk about how you can show your gratitude for these things. How have we seen God’s hand in our lives?

Lesson for D&C 51-57

 Read

D&C 51:9

And let every man deal honestly, and be alike among this people, and receive alike, that ye may be one, even as I have commanded you

Activity

Today, we are going to play a game. Print 1 copy of the board game below and 7 copies of the cards. If you would prefer to use a spinner, you could create one by clicking here. Make game pieces out of small pieces of paper, beans, or game pieces from other games. Place all of the

pieces next to the one. Draw cards or spin the spinner to determine how many spaces to move. The first player to reach 100, wins! Offer a treat to the winner.

Talk About It

How would you have felt if (the winner) had cheated to win? Ask the people who didn't win, how it felt to lose.

Play Again

This time, play cooperatively. Place one piece next to the one. Everyone spins the spinner or draws cards to advance your piece. Continue until you all reach 100, together. Give a treat to everyone, when they win.

Talk About It

How was it different when we were all working together, as one?

Explain

The scriptures tell us in D&C that we should all be honest with other people and treat each other equally. When working by ourselves, there is only one winner, just like there was only one winner in our first round. When we do as D&C 51:9 says and "be alike among this people, and receive alike" we can be equal and one. Then everyone wins and benefits, just like we all won

Lesson For D&C 49-50

Read D&C 50:23-25

23 And that which doth not edify is not of God, and is darkness.

24 That which is of God is light; and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day.

25 And again, verily I say unto you, and I say it that you may know the truth, that you may chase darkness from among you;

Activity

You will need: A dark room, a picture of Christ and several things that emit light (lighters, birthday candles, candlesticks, glow sticks, flashlights, lanterns, bulb candles, etc.) it works best if you use things that will gradually light the room.

Set up the picture of Christ behind the things that emit light.Turn off the lights. Explain that things we do that make us feel yucky inside are like this darkness, but when we learn about Heavenly Father and gospel things, our light grows, and we feel happy. Ask your family members what they can do to make our gospel light continue to grow? With each answer, light a candle. When all of the room is illuminated with light, point out that when you carry with you the truths you learn about in the gospel, you carry a light inside of you that will attract people to you. Just as you can see the Savior in the once dark room, other people will see this light in you. They will want to have the light of Heavenly Father and Jesus. This is what gives you opportunities to share the gospel with others. It makes you happier and it makes other people happier to be around you.

Lesson for D&C 46-48

Read D&C 47

1 Behold, it is expedient in me that my servant John should write and keep a regular history, and assist you, my servant Joseph, in transcribing all things which shall be given you, until he is called to further duties.

2 Again, verily I say unto you that he can also lift up his voice in meetings, whenever it shall be expedient.

3 And again, I say unto you that it shall be appointed unto him to keep the church record and history continually; for Oliver Cowdery I have appointed to another office.

4 Wherefore, it shall be given him, inasmuch as he is faithful, by the Comforter, to write these things. Even so. Amen.

Activity

Encourage your children to begin keeping a record of their personal histories throughout the week. You could get a notebook for each child and help them decorate the cover so that they could begin keeping a journal. For younger children, you could get a drawing pad and let them decorate the cover. Then, they could draw pictures of their days, and you could write what the picture represents. Keep these entries as the beginnings of their personal histories. You could also voice record verbal histories by asking your children to tell you about their days.

Another idea would be to give your children a daily or weekly prompt of "How did you see God's hand in your life today/this week?" or "What happened today/this week that you would want to tell your grandkids about someday.

If possible, you could share a personal journal entry and/or share a story of an ancestor from familysearch.org or a journal or record you may have from an ancestor.

Ask your children why they think it is important to keep personal histories.

Click the picture below to see an example of how a recorded story from my grandfather has had an impact on my family.

My Dad wrote an awesome article for our ward newsletter about how "Family History is for Families." I've pasted it below. His love and passion for family history encouraged me to hop on Family Search and add some memories that I had of my grandfathers and great-grandparents that have passed away. I would encourage you to do the same.
