FHE for D&C 109-110

 Read or Summarize D&C 109

You can read it here, Doctrine and Covenants 109

Tell your children that this was the prayer given at the dedication of the Kirtland Temple. As you read it, look for things that can help you get excited about spending more time in the temple, as the things said in that prayer applies to temple work today.

For younger children you can ask them how they can help temple work continue, even if they are too young to go into the temple. Some examples might be babysitting while Mom and Dad go to the temple, finding names of deceased relatives that need temple work done, and learning about their ancestors.

Maybe you could take a trip to a temple and sing "I Love to See the Temple" and "The Spirit of God" as you look at the temple. "The Spirit of God" is sung at every temple dedication.

FHE Lesson for D&C 106-108

Read D&C 107:99–100

99 Wherefore, now let every man learn his duty, and to act in the office in which he is appointed, in all diligence.

100 He that is slothful shall not be counted worthy to stand, and he that learns not his duty and shows himself not approved shall not be counted worthy to stand. Even so. Amen.

Activity

Give a family member written instructions (older children) or verbal instructions (younger children) for a household task, and invite him or her to choose how to do the task: diligently, slothfully, or without reading/listening to the instructions. Let the rest of the family watch him or her do the task and guess which approach the family member chose. Then let other family members have a turn. Why does the Lord need us to both learn our duties and do them with all diligence?

FHE Lesson for 102-105

 Read

D&C 105

38 And again I say unto you, sue for peace, not only to the people that have smitten you, but also to all people;

39 And lift up an ensign of peace, and make a proclamation of peace unto the ends of the earth;

40 And make proposals for peace unto those who have smitten you, according to the voice of the Spirit which is in you, and all things shall work together for your good.

41 Therefore, be faithful; and behold, and lo, I am with you even unto the end. Even so. Amen.

Discuss

Ask you children what this scripture means. Break it down into simple questions. The following is an example:

  1. What does it mean to sue for peace?

  2. What does it mean to be peaceful with those who have smitten you?

  3. How do you give peace to all men, even if they haven't hurt you?

  4. What proposal of peace can you give to someone who has smitten you?

  5. What are you going to do to lift up an ensign of peace to your parents and siblings?

  6. What are you going to do to lift up an ensign of peace to the world?

  7. Point out that by acting in peace, the Lord promises that all things will work together for your good, and He promises to be with you to the end.

Activity

Click on the link below for Peace Bucks. Print 1 page, for each child, of the "peace bucks" below. Have your children come tell you when they choose peace over anger or hate. For example: Child A hits Child B. Child B tells Child A, "I choose peace." Then Child B tells you that he/she chose peace, and you give them a peace buck. That way, you are rewarding positive behavior. If you want to really reinforce the good behavior, you can let the peace bucks buy an ice cream cone at the end of the week.

FHE Lesson for D&C 98-101

 READ

D&C 100

16 For I will raise up unto myself a pure people, that will serve me in righteousness;

D&C 101

3 Yet I will own them, and they shall be mine in that day when I shall come to make up my jewels.

4 Therefore, they must needs be chastened and tried, even as Abraham, who was commanded to offer up his only son.

5 For all those who will not endure chastening, but deny me, cannot be sanctified.

18 They that remain, and are pure in heart, shall return, and come to their inheritances, they and their children, with songs of everlasting joy, to build up the waste places of Zion

Activity

Materials:

2 jars

1 cup of water

2 tbsp dirt

Filter (I used coffee filters that I had to use as a filter for masks. Pieces of old shirts or cloth works well too.)

Process:

Add the water and dirt to one of the jars. Put the filter over the second jar and secure in place with rubber band. Explain, that when we come to earth, we are like this jar, and we need to be sanctified or purified in order to be with Heavenly Father again. We can become purified and sanctified by following the commandments of Jesus Christ and allowing Heavenly Father and Jesus to guide us and by following their commandments, even when it is hard. Have your children think of examples.

Poor the water through the filter. Clean out the jar of mud and place a new filter on that jar. Continue moving the water back and forth between the two jars, replacing the filter each time. When your water is clear. Explain that though the water is clear, it is not pure enough to drink yet.

Poor that water into a small sauce pan, and bring to a boil for about 2 min. Explain that just as boiling the water kills all remaining germs, the Atonement of Jesus Christ kills any impurities in us.

When the water is done boiling, Poor it into a heat resistant dish to cool. When it is cool enough, it will be pure enough to drink.
