Family Home Evening for Mosiah 18-24

 Lesson

Last week, we learned about Abinadi. He was burned up by the wicked, King Noah. One of King Noah’s priests, Alma, heard Abinadi’s words and believed all of them. This made King Noah mad, and he tried to kill Alma, but he escaped into the woods and wrote the words of Abinadi. He helped establish the Church of Jesus Christ and many people were converted and baptized. The people of the Church of Jesus Christ were saved from Noah, but many of the Nephites stayed wicked. Heavenly Father humbled them by allowing the Lamanites to take them captive. When the Lamanites ruled over them, one of King Noah’s former priests, named Amulon, became a ruler over Alma and all who followed him. Amulon was a mean man and treated them terribly. He told them that if any of them were caught praying, they would be put to death. Alma’s people stopped praying aloud, but they continued to pray in their hearts. They begged Heavenly Father to save them. Heavenly Father heard their prayers!

Read or Summarize Alma 24:13-15

13 And it came to pass that the voice of the Lord came to them in their afflictions, saying: Lift up your heads and be of good comfort, for I know of the covenant which ye have made unto me; and I will covenant with my people and deliver them out of bondage.

14 And I will also ease the burdens which are put upon your shoulders, that even you cannot feel them upon your backs, even while you are in bondage; and this will I do that ye may stand as witnesses for me hereafter, and that ye may know of a surety that I, the Lord God, do visit my people in their afflictions.

15 And now it came to pass that the burdens which were laid upon Alma and his brethren were made light; yea, the Lord did strengthen them that they could bear up their burdens with ease, and they did submit cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord.

Activity

You will need a backpack of rocks, hand weights or something heavy.

Ask your family members what trials or burdens they have that seem impossible to bear?

As they name the burdens they have, add the weights to the bag. When they feel like they can’t bear it, re-read the scripture. Ask them to remove an item from the bag every time they hear about something God does to help with their burdens. You could then talk with them about how Heavenly Father can make our burdens lighter when we seek His help. Explain that though trials and hard things aren’t always just taken away when we pray, Heavenly Father can help give us strength to endure the trials that we have to go through. Just like the people of Alma, seek the Lord when you are having a rough time, because He is anxiously waiting for you to pray for help!
