Family Home Evening for D&C 3-5

 Story

This week, we will be learning about a sad thing that happened with Joseph Smith. After he received the Gold Plates, he began to translate the Book of Mormon. A man named Martin Harris helped him. Martin Harris wanted to take 116 pages of the Book of Mormon to show his wife and some other people. Joseph asked Heavenly Father if it would be okay, and he said, “No.”

Martin Harris kept asking Joseph to ask again. So he did. After the third time of asking, Heavenly Father allowed Joseph to let Martin Harris borrow them. Martin showed them to his wife and several scholars. Unfortunately, Martin Harris lost the 116 pages of the Book of Mormon. Joseph felt horrible about what happened, and his ability to translate the Book of Mormon was taken from him for a while.

Heavenly Father said this to Joseph:

Read D&C 3:7-8

7 For, behold, you should not have feared man more than God. Although men set at naught the counsels of God, and despise his words—

8 Yet you should have been faithful; and he would have extended his arm and supported you against all the fiery darts of the adversary; and he would have been with you in every time of trouble.

Discuss

Has there ever been a time in your life that you did something that you knew was wrong, but you did it anyway?

What does Heavenly Father’s words to Joseph Smith teach us about what happens when we have faith and do what is right?
