Family Home Evening for Romans 1-6

 Read or Summarize Romans 3:23-28

23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.

28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

Activity

Place a toy on a high shelf and ask your child to get it down. If they ask if they can get a chair or stool to help them. Say that they can (place it high enough that they still won’t be able to get it while standing on the object). Tell them that if they will give you a hug, tell you that they love you, and promise to listen to you that you will help them get the toy down. After they do those three things,  lift them up, so that they can reach the toy.

Lesson

Tell your child that the toy represents eternal life. Grace is “divine … help or strength, given through the bounteous mercy and love of Jesus Christ.” Through grace, all people will be resurrected and receive immortality. In addition, “grace is an enabling power that allows men and women to lay hold on eternal life and exaltation after they have expended their own best efforts.” We do not earn grace through our efforts; rather, it is grace that gives us “strength and assistance to do good works that [we] otherwise would not be able to maintain.” No matter what we do, we can not receive eternal life, just like no matter what you did, you could not reach the toy. In this scenario, I (the parent) represented Jesus Christ. Eternal life is always there, just like the toy was always there, but in order to receive eternal life, we need to use the Grace of God, given to us through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Just like when you promised to love me and do all that you can do to show that love, by listening to me, then I used my strength to get the toy.  When we repent, love the Lord, and listen to and follow the teachings of Jesus Christ to the best of our ability. We receive the divine help and strength necessary to receive eternal life.
